In chemistry, a silicate is any member of a family of anions consisting of silicon and oxygen, usually with the general formula [SiO. 4−x] n, where 0 ≤ x < 2. The family includes orthosilicate SiO 4−4 (x = 0), metasilicate SiO 2− Silicate minerals are rock-forming minerals made up of silicate groups. They are the largest and most important class of minerals and make up approximately 90 percent of the Earth’s crust. In mineralogy, silica SiO₂ is usually considered a silicate mineral.Silicateminerals are the most common of Earth’s minerals and include quartz, feldspar, mica, amphibole, pyroxene, and olivine. Silica tetrahedra, made up of silicon and oxygen, form chains, sheets, and frameworks, and bond with other cations to form silicateminerals.
